Field record // sysadmin

Adam Van Nostrand

Sysadmin. Security and AI. Builder of things I wish existed.

I started setting up Minecraft servers off YouTube at 12, and I never really stopped learning that way: build the thing, break the thing, figure out why. Now I can spin up a swarm of about 100 agents, coordinated over a Redis layer I built, that argue with each other until something good survives. I call it the Edison Lab.

I don't have a CS degree. I have taste, a threat model, and a habit of reading every line the AI hands me before it goes anywhere near production. AI does the typing. I make the calls and own the outcome.

I've pushed back on people with a lot more rank than me over security, and I'll do it again. My rule is simple: if a system doesn't need your data, it shouldn't have it. You can't give up what you never had.

Right now I'm the sysadmin and de facto security and AI lead for an MSP. Next, I want a team where security and AI are the actual job, not the extra one.

01 // Builds

Clipfarm

Watches livestreams, finds the moments worth clipping, and turns them into finished vertical clips with no one touching it. An agent delivers each clip to my phone, routed through my home machine because the cloud server couldn't run the messaging client. A separate monitor checks every 15 minutes and pings me if anything stalls. Posting stays manual: I pick what goes out. Built solo in about 10 days on a used Dell micro PC.

Living Office

A digital twin of my clip pipeline, fed by the real thing. A tiny pixel crew watches the streams, stamps the good moments, and renders clips at 3am while I am unconscious. They drink coffee. They talk behind my back. They work for free. Best employees I have ever had.

Mitsumeru

A RAG pipeline over 98,000 real MSP support tickets. Built solo in nine business days and self-hosted end to end, so no client data leaves the building.

Physics Benchmark

Nine frontier models, one prompt, one shot each: build a complex 3D physics engine. Every result is graded pass/fail against objective criteria, written up as a 29-page paper.

02 // The approval gate

Early on, I gave an agent too much access and it deleted something without asking. It caught and restored it on its own, but that was enough for me. Now my agents investigate and propose, and nothing that touches my systems leaves the sandbox until I approve.
